4 Essential Truths About Choosing the Best Dog Supplements

Choosing supplements for your dog can feel overwhelming, with so many products making bold claims. That's why we sat down with Joy, founder of Scrumpf, to cut through the noise. Here are four key truths every pet owner should know before buying dog supplements:

1. Always Check the Ingredients

Not all dog supplements are created equal.
Fillers like pea flour, potato starch, sunflower oil, and colourings are often added to bulk out a product without providing any real benefit. If a brand doesn’t clearly list every ingredient (and explain why it’s included) it's a sign to walk away.

When choosing a supplement, transparency is key. Look for clean, high-quality ingredients that serve a real purpose.

2. Dosage Matters More Than You Think

Buzzwords like "turmeric," "hemp," or "CBD" sound powerful, but if they only make up 2% of the product, they're unlikely to do much.
Always check the dosage and strength of the active ingredients. A quality dog supplement should clearly show how much of each ingredient your pet is actually getting, not just list trendy names.

3. Know What Your Dog Really Needs

Most dogs don't need a daily multivitamin if they’re already eating a complete, balanced diet.
Instead, focus on targeted supplements based on your dog’s specific needs, and start preventative care early.

Joint support is one of the best examples: even if your dog isn’t showing signs of stiffness, introducing joint supplements around one year old can help protect their mobility long-term, especially for large breeds and active dogs.

Other supplements, like calming or digestive support, are great to use when there’s a specific need based on your dog’s behaviour or health.

4. Format Impacts Effectiveness

Not all supplement forms are created equal.
Gummies and chews often contain extra binders, sugars, and flavourings to make them more appealing. In contrast, powders and oils tend to be cleaner and deliver a higher concentration of active ingredients without unnecessary fillers.

Choosing the right format can make a big difference in how well the supplement works for your dog.
